The Gordie Howe International Bridge Project represents a once-in-a-generation infrastructure undertaking, delivering critical transportation improvements while supporting economic growth and job creation in the Windsor–Detroit region. Our drilling team was proud to contribute specialized subsurface expertise to this landmark project.

The scope of the project included:

  • Completing boreholes to depths of up to 150 feet as part of the geotechnical investigation program
  • Installing monitoring wells in significant artesian conditions which was encountered within the bedrock while drilling
  • Precise control measures to maintain safe and effective operations

To manage these conditions, our team implemented proven techniques and specialized equipment, including:

  • The use of Portland cement and heavy drill mud to control and stabilize flowing conditions
  • Careful installation of monitoring wells under artesian pressure
  • Application of proper sealing and flow-prevention methods throughout drilling and well installation

Drill casing was lightly cemented into the rock formation, allowing bedrock coring to proceed while maintaining control over artesian flow—ensuring both data integrity and operational safety.

Following drilling and coring, boreholes were advanced to final depths, backfilled, and equipped with monitoring instrumentation. Each borehole was sealed in full compliance with Ontario Regulation 903 to ensure long-term environmental protection and groundwater integrity, after which temporary casing was safely removed.

Surface casing installations were designed to allow safe pressure relief and packer testing if required. A pressure gauge was installed on each well to provide real-time readings prior to any controlled release or testing, adding an extra layer of safety and accuracy.

This project highlights our ability to successfully manage complex subsurface conditions—including artesian environments in bedrock—while meeting strict regulatory and project requirements. Through careful planning, advanced drilling techniques, and a strong commitment to safety and quality, we delivered reliable results that support the long-term success of this transformative infrastructure project.
