North Brampton Drilling Project

The North Brampton Drilling Project presented complex subsurface conditions that required advanced drilling techniques and careful environmental controls. Our team successfully completed deep borehole drilling and monitoring well installation while managing challenging artesian pressures, groundwater flow, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas within the formation.

During drilling, significant artesian conditions were encountered in the bedrock, further complicated by active groundwater flow and gas presence. These factors required enhanced safety protocols and specialized drilling practices to ensure both worker safety and well integrity.

Key Project Challenges

  • Managing deep borehole artesian pressures
  • Controlling groundwater flow during drilling operations
  • Mitigating H₂S gas risks within the borehole environment
  • Installing a monitoring well under active artesian conditions

To safely advance the boreholes, our team utilized heavy drilling mud to stabilize the formation while controlling water inflow and gas migration. This approach allowed drilling to continue efficiently while maintaining a safe working environment. Once target depth was reached, a monitoring well was installed within the artesian zone, and the borehole was sealed using heavy cement and grout to prevent groundwater migration and ensure long-term environmental protection.

Additional measures were required to protect the well from freezing conditions near the surface. To prevent water from rising into the upper 6–8 feet, where freezing could compromise the installation, a down-the-hole expandable well plug was installed.

How the Expandable Well Plug Works

  • A T-handle is turned clockwise to compress the internal rubber seal
  • Compression expands the rubber bladder outward, creating a tight seal against the well casing
  • This prevents water from rising into the freeze zone and exiting the well

A pressure gauge mounted on top of the plug provides real-time readings of internal water pressure prior to removal, ensuring safe handling and monitoring.

Expandable well plugs can be customized in length and diameter to suit specific site conditions, allowing for flexible application across a range of drilling environments. This project demonstrates our ability to safely manage complex drilling scenarios involving artesian pressures, groundwater flow, and hazardous gases while delivering reliable, long-term monitoring solutions.
